The right carrier for cats

Cats travel differently from dogs. They come to us by car but cover the last few metres in the carrier, and it is exactly that short distance that decides how relaxed the stay begins. That is why a sturdy carrier matters to us.

What makes a good carrier

Firm plastic with a metal grille, a catch that closes securely, and an opening on top. The lid is the most important point: a cat pressing herself into the back corner can be lifted out calmly from above. Through a front flap you have to pull her out, which is unpleasant for both sides. Carriers with a removable top are the most comfortable solution.

It should be stackable, because the carriers are stored here during the stay.

From experience

Every season we see what goes wrong: one carrier was missing two of its four door catches and opened as it was lifted. One cat unpicked her fabric bag within minutes and was standing in the middle of the car park. Only a rigid carrier can be carried and stowed safely.

Getting the cat used to the carrier

It is best if the carrier stands open in the living room weeks before the journey, with a familiar blanket inside. That way it becomes a place to sleep rather than a signal for the vet. A few treats inside, and now and then close the door briefly and open it again. After two or three weeks the cat gets in by herself.

On the day of travel a cloth over the carrier helps: less to see means less excitement.
